Sevenfriday: S1/01 “With a Recyclable Animation Ring”

Sevenfriday presents the S1/01. The new S-Series watch pays homage to the brand’s infamous rounded square box with an animation ring that pays its industrial roots forward.

As a nod to clean industries, the S1/01 brings industrial essence into clear focus. With recycling emerging because of industrial design, the recyclable number 7 transparent animation ring reveals the conscious construction. The translucent nylon allows the stainless steel body and fixing screws to be seen for the first time. The interface is stripped back to show the engine including a stencilled seconds disc. The hands have been designed with metallic blue and luminous afterglow pigments for optimal visibility.

“From the beginning, the idea of representing clean technology in a Sevenfriday watch inspired by industry was a design application we had to explore,” says the S-Series designer. “The open design and transparent animation ring is also the best vector to portray the inner workings of the mechanism and reveal the serious construction of the box for the first time. This is where style meets function.”

The open work interface suggests skeleton yet the caseback which houses the NFC chip sets a new design standard. The open balance wheel of the engine and design detail leave little to the imagination. The S1/01 was built to display the wheels and gears that provide the movement of a timepiece. The S1/01 box is sandblasted and polished to a high stainless steel shine and metallic blue Super-Luminova, put the seconds disc and hour hand in full view.

“The S1/01 portrays the openness of the individual who wears a Sevenfriday watch,” says Dan Niederer, Sevenfriday CEO & Co-Founder. “The wearer has a sense of freedom with no restrictions on living their passion. And while we do not recommend recycling the animation ring, we believe we have moved the bar on what it means to upcycle.”
