Panerai: Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech
15 February 2019For decades, Panerai watches and precision instruments have equipped the commandos of the Italian Navy and, in honour of that partnership, today Panerai still makes creations to evoke the legendary history of those special forces who carried out numerous feats of heroism. The latest creation in this series is the new Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech.
The Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech has decidedly military features, in both its character and its rigorous quality. It fully deserves the designation Survival Instrument which is engraved on the back together with the image inspired by commandos of the Italian Navy. The 47mm case is made of carbotech, a material based on carbon fibre “which was introduced into the world of high quality watchmaking by Panerai” that is lighter than titanium and stronger than steel.
The special composition of this material “consisting of extremely thin layers of carbon fibre bound together by a special polymer” gives every individual watch a unique, camouflage appearance, which is reflected in the design of the dial made of carbon, with the date window at 3 o’clock and the small seconds hand at 9 o’clock.
The unidirectional rotating bezel enables the times of immersion to be calculated with confidence, while legibility in the dark is ensured by the generous coating of grey Super-LumiNova applied to the markers and the large skeleton hands.
Inside the solid carbotech case beats the heart of the watch: the P.9010 calibre with three days of power reserve, entirely developed and created in-house by Panerai. The balance, solidly fixed by a bridge with twin supports, it is fitted with the device which stops the movement as soon as the winding crown is pulled out, so that the watch can be precisely synchronised with a reference signal. As well as this, the hour hand can be conveniently adjusted without interfering with the movement of the minute hand, by means of the device which moves it directly forward or backward in jumps of one hour. LIMITED EDITION
An exceptional new Special Edition revives one of the greatest tales of heroism in horological history: the partnership between Panerai and the commandos of the Italian Navy. The new Panerai Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech will enable its 33 fortunate owners to enjoy a unique experience: taking part in a training session with Comsubin, the Diving and Commando Group of the Italian Navy. Hardly anyone who is not a member of this select award-winning circle can take part in this experience, which today Panerai is offering exclusively to its bravest and most passionate clients. The number of product examples being produced – 33 – is the same as the number of Gold Medals for Military Valour won by those who have been members of Comsubin in the course of its history.
The limited edition of the Panerai Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech is distinguished from the rest of the collection not only by the experience to which it gives access, but also by some stylistic features. In this version the all-black design is enhanced by details in military green: the Super-LumiNova which makes the hands and the hour markers on the dial and the rotating bezel visible in the dark and the tough rubber strap. On the back of the case, the Comsubin logo is engraved. (Price €.39.900)
