Panerai: 70 Years Of Luminor

Exactly 70 years after the introduction of the Luminor, a self-luminous substance based on tritium dating from 1950 which became an aesthetic and functional expression of the brand, Panerai is revinving the legend with three new editions based on the Luminor Marina 44mm.

Inside the case, performance are guaranteed by the automatic P.9010 Calibre, entirely conceived and developed in-house by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. Equipped with the function for quickly setting the time, which at the same time modifies the date, this movement stands out by the power reserve of three days provided by its twin spring barrels. 

Conscious of the technical and mechanical reliability of its timepieces, after the establishment of the Pam.Guard care program in 2019, Panerai raises the stakes. Indeed, 70 are not only the years since the discovery of the Luminor to date but also the years of warranty that Panerai reserve on these three references. A period never seen before that even exceeds the 50-year guarantee of the Panerai LAB-ID presented in 2017.

Distinctive sign of the Luminor Marina – 44 mm (PAM01117 Titanium DMLS, PAM01118 Carbotech and PAM01119 Fibratech) is the luminous highlighting of iconic elements such as the bridge protecting the crown, the crown itself and the locking lever, made possible by the use of an evolved Super-LuminovaX1 able to ensure a higher intensity and a longer lasting persistence. Identity confirmed on rehaut, decal dial and strap stitching. 

Luminor Marina Titanium – 44mm PAM01117

Surprisingly light (100 grams including the strap) and extremely strong, it owes its characteristics to its titanium structure, which is manufactured by the technology known as Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), a process of futuristic 3D printing involving the sedimentation of titanium powder, sintered layer by layer by a high-powered optical fibre laser, 30 microns at a time. 

Water-resistant to 300 metres, the new Luminor Marina – 44 mm is fitted with a strap made of Panerai Sportech, woven to give a waterproof rubberised effect, blue with luminous stitching and a Velcro fastener. A second rubber strap, blue with a titanium tongue buckle, is also supplied, together with a tool for changing the strap and a special box with a luminous stylised representation of the dial of the Luminor Marina on its lid. (Price € 19.000)

Luminor Marina Carbotech – 44mm PAM01118

This model owes its non-homogenous texture to the carbotech of which it is made. This unusual compound was introduced into high-quality watchmaking by Panerai. It consists of thin layers of carbon fibres superimposed on each other, orientated alternately (a good seven layers per millimeter), fused together under high-pressure temperature-controlled conditions, and finally further consolidated with an advanced polymer. It is a material remarkable for its mechanical properties, its lightness and its resistance to stress and corrosion. 

Water-resistant to 300 metres, the new Luminor Marina Carbotech – 44 mm is fitted with a Panerai Sportech strap, black with luminescent stitching and Velcro fastening. A second strap in black rubber with a titanium tongue buckle completes the equipment, together with a tool for changing it and a special box decorated with a luminous image of the Luminor Marina dial on the lid. (Price € 16.000)

Luminor Marina Fibratech – 44mm PAM01119

To enhance the appearance of Fibratech is the opaque and uneven texture of this compound consisting of fibers coming from the fusion of basalt rock and minerals additives. These fibres are bound with high-end polymers to become thin layers which are superimposed in a precise orientation and then consolidated through a pressure and temperature controlled process. 

Water-resistant to a depth of 300 metres, the new Luminor Marina Fibratech – 44 mm is fitted with a Panerai Sportech strap, black with luminescent sewing and a Velcro fastener. A second strap in black rubber with a titanium tongue buckle completes the equipment, with a special tool for changing it and a personalised box decorated with a luminous image of the iconic Luminor Marina dial on the lid. (Price € 19.000)

The new special edition Panerai Luminor Marina – 44mm (Titanium DMLS, Carbotech and Fibratech) are produced in a limited edition of 270 units each and are available exclusively in Panerai boutiques. Each model is engraved with the words “70 Years Warranty” on the case back.
