Cyrus: Klepcys Vertical Tourbillon
5 November 2018The Tourbillon takes centre stage in the new Cyrus Klepcys Vertical Tourbillon. For the first time in watchmaking, this complication has set vertically in the middle of the dial, it breaks all the rules that have traditionally put it at 6 o’clock.
With the very first glance at the Klepcys Vertical Tourbillon, the eye is instantly drawn to the three-dimensional architecture of the dial. It is dominated by an arched vertical bridge, decorated with “microbillage” and featuring bevelled, polished edges which, depending on the version, is in gold or black DLC. Its exclusive shape is purposely designed to blend with the symmetrical lines of the timepiece and to highlight the central tourbillon, that performs a complete rotation in one minute.
Painstaking studies by CYRUS on the positions of the watch over the course of 24 hours revealed that the 90° angle of the tourbillon cage allows it to remain vertical in most cases. When set at this angle, the cage containing the entire regulating mechanism rotates on itself to offset the negative effects gravity has on the balance wheel more effectively.
Encased in a cushion-shaped case with two crowns, the time of is read off in two separate parts which highlight the symmetry of the central axis. To the right, a pointer reads off the sweeping retrograde minutes on the arch, running from 0 to 60 at 5-second intervals. The left-hand arch indicates the retrograde jumping hours in Arabic numerals, whilst the seconds are displayed in the centre, and can be read off the tourbillon cage thanks to small blocks engraved with Arabic numerals – on a scale of 5 – in white, with the exception of 60 seconds, which is in bright red.
The slightly concave dial with “microbillage” and black DLC finish is embellished with a geometric motif with small engraved triangles. At 12 o’clock, between the two arches ofthe tourbillon bridge, a sphere with a 5mm diameter stands out. This reveals the power reserve, totalling over 100 hours when fully charged.
Inside of the 44 mm case beats the heart of the hand-wound movement, designed and made entirely in-house, with two parallel barrels, offering a power reserve of more than 4 days. The crown at 3 o’clock adjusts time and winds the movement, whilst the hour can rapidly be corrected by pushing the crown set at 9.
The Klepcys Vertical Tourbillon is available in three executions, with 38 pieces issued for each: in grade 5 titanium case with black DLC finish (€. 105.000), in 4N 18K rose gold version (€. 118.000), and in a two-tone model in 4N 18K rose gold, combined with a black DLC titanium bezel (€. 135.000)
