IWC Portofino Moon Phase
27 July 2017Before letting you leave for your vacation we tried another timepiece for you. It’s a new watch but with a long history behind, rich in style and charm, named after one of the most beautiful places in Italy… Portofino!
After more than 30 years from the first launch in Portofino in 1984, today IWC presents a model with moon phase. We are talking about the new IWC Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase.
The new reference “5164” is available in two different editions, the first with red gold 18k case and slate-grey dial, and the second, the one we tried, has a steel case and silver-plated dial. Both versions are equipped with a Santoni’s brown alligator strap.
Lines and design revokes the classic and elegant traits that always distinguished the Portofino, while the larger size of the case, 45mm large and 13.5mm thick, makes it younger and contemporary. On the wrist it is light and easy to wear despite the bigger size. The use of steel for the case makes it ideal for every occasion, a good mix of elegance combined with style.
The functions are perfectly balanced on the dial, easy to read even at a first glance. Analyzing the dial we can see the moon phase indicator at 12 o’clock, the date at 3 o’clock, small hacking seconds sub dial at 6 o’clock, and 8 days power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock.
Below the dial, visible through the sapphire glass case back beats the “heart” of our Portofino, the manual winding caliber IWC 59800 entirely produced in-house, with Breguet spiral and decorations on bridges and baseplate.
Let’s highlight one of the biggest strengths of this timepiece… The price! Every once in a while, collectors and young enthusiasts will not have to sell a kidney for purchasing their new watch… Right, because the price of the new Portofino Moon Phase in steel is € 13.400, a fair and competitive price point!
